Health and medical care

In theory, EU citizens with a European Health Insurance Card (obtainable in their own country) can get free treatment under the Greek health service. However, you are likely to receive the minimum treatment; medication must be paid for and state hospital facilities are over-stretched in the tourist season. It’s therefore preferable to obtain private medical insurance for your holiday. British citizens should check new healthcare cover regulations post-Brexit. Doctors and dentists are concentrated in Zákynthos Town and Argostóli; your hotel or apartment owner will be able to find you one who speaks English. Most resorts have a local medical clinic.

Hospitals. The hospitals in Zákynthos Town and Argostóli operate a 24-hour emergency service (tel: 166, or, Zákynthos: tel: 26950 59100; Argostóli tel: 26710 24641). Otherwise call the tourist police (Zákynthos tel: 26950 27367; Argostóli tel: 26710 22815).

Pharmacies. A red or green cross on a white background identifies a pharmacy (farmakío). They are normally open only during the morning Monday to Friday but a notice on the door should tell you the nearest one for after-hours service. One pharmacy is always open in Zákynthos Town and Argostóli at night and on Saturday and Sunday. Without a prescription, you can’t get sleeping pills, barbiturates or medicine for stomach upsets.

While swimming look out for sea urchins – their black spines are very sharp and will break off in your skin. If this happens, seek medical attention, as they are very tricky to remove.
